For folks who are looking to keep things out of landfills, score some free stuff, declutter their homes, build community, and help out their neighbors, Freecycle is an excellent resource!
How it works: Freecycle is basically a collection of Yahoo groups based on neighborhood (Arlington, Washington DC, Silver Spring, etc.). You join the Yahoo group and people send out offers of things they're getting rid of: everything from diapers to craft supplies to televisions. If you see something you want, you respond to the individual who listed it (politeness helps). If they have several responses, they pick one person to pick it up from them (often from their front porch if it's in the burbs, not sure how it works in more apartment-dense areas). If you have things you're getting rid of - books, a bottle of shampoo you were allergic to, whatever is allowed under Freecycle guidelines - you do the same. It's awesome.
I even made a friend on freecycle! She was looking for stickers for her bicycle helmet.
