ConneXions is a small, slashy relaxacon that used to happen about ten years ago in the area, and I'm working with some people on bringing it back this August.

Registration is open through August 1
Panel Suggestions are being taken now.

We welcome everyone, as long as they're a fan of talking/daydreaming/writing/art-ing about queer relationships between fictional characters or possibly famous people.

A tractor trailer has overturned on the ramp from the Inner Loop to the I-95 Southbound HOV lanes. The tractor trailer is leaning on the jersey wall of the ramp, with debris spilled below onto the Inner Loop. All travel lanes on the ramp are blocked. All travel lanes of the Inner Loop are reportedly blocked by debris, with traffic getting by only in the left shoulder. Be advised, there is another vehicle accident blocking all Inner Loop Main Line lanes prior to Braddock Rd (near Robinson Terminal), entrance ramps to the HOT Lanes are not affected.

FEMINISM AND SECULARISM.
Given the role religion has played in the repression of women, they would seem to be natural allies, and, indeed, many feminists have been outspoken and influential secularists. However, the relationship between secularism and women’s issues remains largely unexamined.

UNTIL NOW.
Join us on May 18-20, 2012, for the “Women in Secularism” conference, sponsored by the Center for Inquiry. This historic conference will discuss and celebrate the many contributions women have made to the secular movement, while critically examining both the successes and failures of secularism in addressing women’s concerns.

As most of the East Coast recovers from Tuesday's small quake, we find ourselves facing another natural disaster. Much like the West Coast is used to quakes, so too is the southeastern US used to hurricanes. Once again, Mother Nature is throwing us a curveball: Hurricane Irene is likely to make landfall somewhere between Wilmington, NC and Virginia Beach, VA on Saturday morning. Current forecasts call for it to hit land as a category 3 hurricane (Winds between 110 and 130mph) and weakening to category 2 (winds between 96 and 110 mph) by Sunday morning. While these are areas that have experienced hurricanes in the past, they do not normally encounter ones of the the severity expected of Irene.

Several cities in Maryland and Virginia have issued already evacuation orders, both mandatory and voluntary. Here in the Springfield area, I have already noticed increase business at grocery stores. In CostCo today, many shoppers were buying only cases of bottled water. CostCo also sold out of portable generators.

Today, not tomorrow, is the time to take actions to prepare for the worst your region can expect. Both the National Hurricane Center and The Weather Channel offer suggestions on building a survival kit:
http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/HAW2/english/prepare/supply_kit.shtml
http://www.weather.com/weather/hurricanecentral/article/hurricane-survival-kit_2011-08-22

The Weather Channel's current information on Hurricane Irene can be found here: http://www.weather.com/weather/hurricanecentral/article/tropical-depression-nine-storm-hurricane-irene_2011-08-20

The National Weather Service's information can be found here: http://www.noaawatch.gov/2011/tc_at09.php

For those of you who can support others, consider checking with friends and family in threatened regions and making sure they are taking proper precautions. If you have elderly or special-needs neighbors, check on them to see if they need anything. If you are planning to evacuate, make sure friends and family know where you are going. If you are in a safe area, consider offering crash space to friends and family who need it.

Stay safe out there.
