MASHA! by Dan Kitrosser
Second Saturday Reading Series | FREE
Saturday, September 10 at 7pm

MASHA! is a poignant comedy about leaving, coming and staying home. Masha Kohner, a thirty-four year old Lebuvitch divorcee, spends her days tending to Yitta, her sometimes-delusional 98 year old great-grandmother, in their modest house in Monsey, New York. When Masha learns that she must have a double mastectomy due to an aggressive bout of breast cancer, she makes plans to go to Manhattan for the surgery to stay with her estranged lesbian sister, Yael. But Yael is no longer Yael. Yael is now Jerri and in the process of saving up money so that she too can have a mastectomy to become a him. MASHA! takes us from Monsey, to the East Village, even to Jim Thorpe, Pennsylvania, all in the hopes of finding wherever that may be.

LABOR DAY CAPITOL CONCERT 2011
National Symphony Orchestra
West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol
Steven Reineke, conductor
Mercedes Ellington
Chuck Brown and his Band

Sunday, September 4, 2011 at 8 p.m., Free event, no tickets required.
Gates open at 3 p.m., Open Rehearsal at 3:30 p.m.

The National Symphony Orchestra celebrates the beginning of its 2011–2012 season with its annual Labor Day Capitol Concert featuring new NSO Principal Pops Conductor Steven Reineke in Legends of Washington Music, a musical tribute to John Philip Sousa, "Duke" Ellington, and Chuck Brown, the "Godfather of Go-Go."

The concert opens with music of John Philip Sousa, born in D.C. in 1854. The NSO performs works by the world-renowned "March King," including the "Circus Gallop" from The Irish Dragoon, the Presidential Polonaise, and several of his most popular marches.

"Duke" Ellington, born in D.C. in 1899, gave America its own distinctive sound that defined jazz for the rest of the world. The NSO is joined by his granddaughter, dancer/choreographer Mercedes Ellington, whose appearance is made possible by the Duke Ellington Fund.

Chuck Brown, the creator of D.C.'s own Go-Go music, joins the NSO as part of his 75th birthday celebration. The NSO has commissioned two arrangements especially for this salute: Dancin' with Chuck Brown, a medley by Tim Berens of three Chuck Brown favorites: "That'll Work," "Harlem Nocturne," and "Bustin' Loose"; and Run, Joe, arranged by Sam Shoup. Following the orchestral portion of the evening, Chuck Brown and his band continue the performance.

PLEASE NOTE: In the event of inclement weather, the concert will take place in the Kennedy Center Concert Hall (No Open Rehearsal). Please call the NSO Summer Concert Hotline at (202) 416-8114 after 11 a.m. to find out if the performance has been moved.

If you’re in Washington on Tuesday and don’t have anything to do after work, come out and meet Alyssa Rosenberg! She’s doing a panel on feminism and television at the Women’s Information Network along with veteran entertainment reporter and American University professor Lorrie Lynch Meier and Howard University’s Tia Tyree. The conversation kicks off at 6:30 at 1900 L Street NW, and I imagine it could move to drinks afterwards.

Passing along some info from a friend:

Looking for something to do this Saturday?

Then come to Stacy's Coffee shop at 7 pm for a concert by Catherine Asaro and Donald Wolcott!

They’ll be playing music from Catherine Asaro’s recent novel, Diamond Star, as well as a combination of original rock, jazzy pop, jazz standards and classic rock. Catherine will be giving readings from Diamond Star as well.

Stacy’s Coffee Shop is at 709 West Broad Street, Falls Church, VA 22046. The phone number is (703)538-6266. Stacy’s serves a variety of sandwiches, pastries, ice cream, soft drinks, and of course excellent coffee.

Catherine Asaro is two-time Nebula® Award-Winning author of science fiction and fantasy. May 2009 saw the publication of her twenty-fourth book, Diamond Star (Baen Books). In April 2009, Starflight Music released a companion music CD, also titled Diamond Star, that offers readers a soundtrack for the book. The songs are performed by Point Valid, a vibrant young rock band from Baltimore, with Catherine as guest vocalist. Her second CD, Goodbye Note, was released in 2010.

Donald Wolcott has been playing piano since the age of five. In 2005, Donald received acclaim from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia as a top soloist in their annual jazz festival. In 2006 he was accepted as a bassist into the Montgomery County Honors Jazz Ensemble. In 2007 he earned an honorable mention for jazz performance in the National Distinguished Scholar Competition, and in 2008 he was one of only four people who received the coveted “Maestro Award” for individual performance at the Washington D.C. Heritage Music Festival. After his high school graduation in 2008, Donald accepted a scholarship to Towson University, where he majors in Jazz Performance and is the pianist for the Towson Big Band, the school’s premiere jazz ensemble.
